As the FIFA World Cup final airs, fans tune in for the first taste of what the long-running sci-fi series will be like with a woman at the helm of the TARDIS.
Appropriately enough, the teaser features new companions — now known as ‘friends’ — Tosin Cole, and Mandip Gill and Bradley Walsh all watching the World Cup when strange things start happening to them.
Meanwhile Entertainment Weekly in the US and Radio Times in the UK preview the new series of Doctor Who with the first official images from the Jodie Whittaker era.
Both magazines reveal never-before-seen images of the female doctor alongside the new cast members, as well as on-set reports from the closely guarded upcoming episodes.
New show-runner Chris Chibnall believes that this series, due to start in October, will be more accessible than ever.
If you’ve never seen Doctor Who, or want to introduce your family and friends to it, this series is the perfect point to start. It was really important to me that there’s no barrier to entry. You don’t need to know anything that’s come before.
Chibnall promises that as well as the new characters there will be ‘all-new monsters’.
The first actual trailer was premiered at the San Diego Comic-Con, where Chibnall and executive producer Matt Strevens appeared alongside the regenerated Time Lord and her new friends.
The Doctor’s new sonic screwdriver was also officially revealed although images of it had leaked on the internet several weeks earlier.
