Whitechapel Elizabeth Line Station

See behind the scenes of the construction of the new Whitechapel station

in London/Transport

A look at the construction of the new Transport for London Elizabeth Line (Crossrail) station.

The new ticket hall will open this autumn, before the opening of the Elizabeth Line, serving the existing tube and overground lines. Running alongside the ticket hall will be a new pedestrian throughway, offering a new north-south shortcut. Elizabeth Line services were scheduled to arrive at the station in December 2018 but have been delayed until autumn 2019.

Sedum plants will cover the roof of the new, larger ticket hall, providing benefits to local air quality, noise, water management and a habitat for wildlife.

A series of colourful collages that will be fixed to the arching platforms 30 metres below street level. ‘A Sunday Afternoon in Whitechapel’ is a new art installation by local artist Chantal Joffe.
